A Message from Mayor Warren
”Safety Starts With You”

Mayor_Warren

When I ran for Mayor in 2009, I often spoke about the City’s need for a comprehensive review of all modes of transportation here in Newton. That is why I formed the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) last year, a group comprised of residents and City staff with an expertise in transportation. The TAC spent over a year studying transportation in Newton, and presented to me their final recommendations. One of the components to their study was how we can improve public safety.

It is with great pride that I announce the launch of a new website called "STREET SMART," the first of a number of initiatives intended to create a new culture of safety in Newton.  This website was produced through a collaborative effort among TAC members, City Staff, and a talented group of Newton North High School students along with their teacher, Chris Murphy.
Don’t be alarmed by the opening video; it is a dramatization.  But I do hope it gets your attention and causes you to read on.

Working together, we can change the way people behave on our City’s streets and I hope you’ll spread the word and help make Newton streets safer for people of all abilities and all ages by all modes of transportation.

Finally, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to dedicated individuals who contributed to this effort, particularly Stephanie Pollack, local resident and transportation expert who chaired this group, and the members of the Outreach and Engagement Subcommittee of the TAC: Mary Lee Belleville, Tricia Bombara, Bea Carp, Lisa Conti, Abby Dalzell, Lucia Dolan, Andreae Downs, Mark Jurilla, Lois Levin, Helen Rittenberg, and Allison Wu.

Sincerely,

Mayor Setti Warren
